Hello everyone,
Firstly, a huge thank you to everyone who was involved in organising the brilliant Christmas Fair last Saturday. It was a lovely event and, despite its scaled down nature, raised such a lot of money for the school. I am incredibly grateful for the efforts of you all - thank you.
Covid-19 Update
It continues to be very difficult to manage all of the extra work that the current climate creates for us and, sadly, I need to make you aware that one of our office team currently has Covid and so will not be with us now until after Christmas. This has put even more pressure on my admin staff as we are now down to three members. I am also acutely aware that if anyone catches Covid in this coming week it will impact their Christmas. Today, I have asked all staff to wear their masks in the communal areas including the corridors, office area and lunch hall. So, once again, I am asking you to continue to wear your masks, to avoid coming to the school office if at all possible and to help me keep everyone healthy in the run-up to Christmas. Thank you.
Christmas Singing
It has been lovely to be able to hold the outdoor Reception and Year 1 Singing this week. Just a reminder of the times for next week:
Year 3: Tuesday 14th December at 9.10 am
Year 4: Tuesday 14th December at 2.50 pm
Year 2: Wednesday 15th December at 2.50 pm
Year 5: Thursday 16th December at 9.10 am
Year 6: Thursday 16th December at 2.50 pm
For morning singing sessions, please drop off your children as normal, leave through the blue gate and then come back round to queue at the brown gate again whilst we register the children and get them onto the playground.
For afternoon singing sessions, please come to the brown gate at 2.45pm we will let you in once the children are ready to sing. Once the singing is finished you can either take your child straight home or, if you have other children to collect, go round to line up at the Brown Gate again, and we will open the gate at normal pick-up time,
Clubs
Please remember there are no clubs next week except the catch-up sessions Tuesday and Wednesday mornings for Basketball, Mr March's rescheduled Goalie Club (Tuesday lunchtime) and Y3&4 Boys Football (Friday lunchtime).
Mr March’s football clubs are now fully booked. Clubs sign-up are for each half-term, so if you weren’t successful this time there will be another opportunity to book. Team selection for tournaments won’t be solely from club members, and the office will email when trials and tournaments are available.
We are pleased that Excel will be back in January providing Years 1-6 with morning multisports clubs, and after-school football clubs. Full details on how to book spaces will be sent out once the coaches are confirmed by Excel.
All clubs, pending any government restrictions, will start week commencing Monday 10 January 2022.
Sheen Mount COP1
We all heard a lot on the news about COP 26 in Glasgow and what it was trying to achieve in terms of protecting our world in the future. Well, not to be left behind, Sheen Mount have held their own COP Conference this week. Here is Leo, from Year 6, to tell you more about it:
On Wednesday 8th of December, members of the Eco-Team gathered in the main hall to talk to two special guests. The first person we met (virtually) was Peter Betts, who sometimes works with the government and goes to the COP (conference of the parties) meetings. COP is an important place where countries come together to discuss how climate change can be stopped and also where they will cooperate to reach national targets. At the COPs Peter delivers speeches about climate change and helps the negotiations. He asked us some questions about how we think governors and prime ministers decide about what happens with climate change. He told us about the difficulties that there are in getting all the countries to agree. Afterwards, we asked questions about what he does at COP.
Our second visitor, Lisa Thompson from Greenpeace, told us the main causes of global warming and surprised us with the fact that cows producing methane, harm the planet and increase global warming. Also, she made sure that we knew the main cause of global warming: fossil fuels, especially coal. She then mentioned a few ways to prevent the horrible thing from happening. Then she told us about what happens with climate change, mentioning floods and extreme weather conditions. Like we did with Peter, we asked questions about climate change and also stated some other ways to stop it from happening.
We were really excited to talk to these influential people and were happy whilst speaking to both of them. We are inspired to take action to help make a difference and save our planet from global warming.
I look forward to finding out about the actions they decide upon. Huge thanks must go to Mrs Mold who organised the conference - what a great idea!
Sporting Endeavours
We have had a very busy sporting week. Today, there is a Year 5 Girls' Football tournament taking place (more about that next week) but we have also had three other sporting events:
On Tuesday, there was a Year 3 and 4 Basketball Tournament at Christ's School. The team of boys and girls played very well. There were four other schools there. In the first game we scored about 4 baskets but, unfortunately, still lost. Every quarter, five people played whilst the others watched from the side. Then we swapped. In the second game we scored 6 baskets but we still lost. However, in the third game we scored about 24 baskets and we won!. Finally, in our last game we scored about 4 baskets but lost. Overall we came 4th but we really enjoyed it and everyone played well. We also found out what we could do to improve next time.
On Wednesday, there was a Year 3 and 4 Blue Moon Cup Football Tournament. When we arrived we were put in a group to play against some other schools. We drew two of these matches and won the rest. That put us into the semi-final which we won 4-0 with some great goals from Max and Sam. Then we went into the final but despite our best efforts, and some great chances, we lost by the cruel score of 3-2. However, we all enjoyed it and had fun, and we all got a silver medal.
On Thursday, Year 5 and 6 attended a basketball tournament, also at Christ's. It was a very closely fought event with a number of "golden baskets" to settle draws. Sheen Mount came third out of seven teams and scored a total of 84 points (which is 42 baskets). We all got medals.
We had a great time and all children played brilliantly!
PSA Corner
Another Big Thank You!
Once again, the PSA would like to thank all the volunteers who put in huge time and effort to make last week’s Christmas Fair such a success. Most importantly, it seemed like everyone had a great time! It was so nice to be able to have everyone together again. Secondly, and of only slightly less import, the Fair raised a net £10,822… just above the pre-pandemic event in 2019, so thank you for all the support.
In addition, the annual Christmas Tree sale raised roughly £1,350. So it was another busy and successful week!! Again, thank you to everyone who volunteers to support the PSA and our efforts to revive the community spirit and raise funds for the school after the challenges of the last two years. Without that help, we can’t make it happen.
Please see below for details on our final event of the year, A Magical Christmas, a lovely family Christmas show. See you all tomorrow and Sunday for the show. Please come early for festive food and drink ahead of the curtain raise! And remember, masks for >11s and lateral flow before coming. Thank you!!
Finally, we have had good initial take up for the Sheen Mount 100 Club, but spots are still available. See below for further detail. You could be a winner!!!
