Dear parents and carers,
The sun is finally out and the events seem to be coming thick and fast. It is great to see the range of activities over the past two weeks, as well as some phenomenal success in Quiz Club and on the sporting front, which you can read about below.
You will have noticed the new children's gym equipment being installed yesterday and today in front of the astroturf. We hope that the children will be able to use them from Monday. This is the first of the £12k spent from our fundraising target of £80k for the playgrounds upgrade.
We look forward to our Easter concerts from R and KS1. Reception is on Friday 28th March at 2.30pm. KS1 (Y1 &Y) is on Tuesday 1st April at 2.30pm with the intention to have this outside. It will take place in the hall in poor weather. Please note the KS1 concert date has been moved since the dates were set at the beginning of the academic year. We notified you at the beginning of this term.
We end the term with a slightly earlier pick-up on Friday 4th April at 2pm (R/KS1) and 2.10pm (KS2)
Red Nose Day
We look forward to celebrating this tomorrow. The link for donations was sent out last night and is here- https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/rnd25-sheen-mount-primary-school?utm_medium=FR&utm_source=CL
The children can wear any item of red clothing with their school uniform and donate comics/magazines for a sale after school. There are currently less than ten donated items-so please have a look tonight.
Some children are looking forward to taking a lesson as part of the day.
School Talent Show
We have planned this for the last day of term-Friday 4th April. Two acts from each KS2 class will be put forward to the event, which will be hosted by some of our ambassadors. Reception and KS1 will come and watch.
School events
Quiz Club
Having negotiated the first qualifying round, our two teams headed into the semi-finals on Tuesday this week. All the stages of this competition take place online and each of our teams has a child in it from Year 3, 4, 5 & 6. They can then confer and all have the same answer or choose different answers as each player in the team has an equal amount of points to use and their own chromebook.
Amazingly.... both teams have qualified for the final at Oxford University in July! A fantastic achievement and well done to the team.
The team will now be training hard for the finals-including taking on some teacher teams!
Year 6 Junior Citizen Day
All of Year 6 walked up to Holly Lodge on Monday to enjoy a whole range of activities and scenarios for Junior Citizen Day.
Zach- I enjoyed the crime scene activity. We were taught some good teamwork and we also learnt about the dangers of drink driving.
Yunus- I enjoyed the police activity. I found it enjoyable and learning more about it. We learnt what the consequences are of stealing and to not do it.
Tabby- I liked the ambulance activity. We learnt how to perform the recovery position on someone and to stay calm when talking to the ambulance service.
Menu tasting from the school council
The school council enjoyed some taste testing for future menus.

They tasted- Marmite, cheddar and spring onion Babka loaf
Summery spinach rice salad
Spanish chicken, chorizo, chickpeas and new potatoes
Blueberry and lemon cake.
Science-from our science lead Mrs Adams.
Last week, five pupils from Years 2 and 3 visited the STEM Outreach Centre at Kingston University to be engineers for the day. They worked together with children from five other local schools, as well as Kingston University students, to complete a range of STEM challenges designed to develop their science enquiry, teamwork and problem solving skills. The children were fantastic ambassadors for the school, and showed great initiative in all the activities; they especially impressed me with the way they tested, adapted and improved their design in the rocket challenge.
"I really liked doing the paper rockets. The fingerprints, wind turbine and Lego were also great fun!" Beatrice
"We used a pump to send the paper rockets flying!" Reuben
"We learned what engineers do and I enjoyed drawing one." Ellie
Y2 Scooter training
They had great fun last week, learning how to stop, brake, turn and walk with their scooter-all within the safety of the school grounds.
Sport
A plethora of various fixtures over the past two weeks.
Last 16 knockout matches following the league fixtures. All three teams have made it through to the quarter finals.
Netball -They had a very worthy 14-9 win over St Stephens. Having had a draw with them in the recent tournament, this was an excellent comeback victory.
Girls Football - They had a strong victory on the school astroturf over Richard Reynolds. 6-2
Tag rugby-A comprehensive 10-0 win over Kew Riverside who, despite the scoreline, showed lots of attacking intent and it was the strong defence by all the team that kept the opposition scoreless.
Netball
A different group of children from Y5/6 then played a friendly match against
Thomson House, where they finished 3-1 winners. It is great to see so many children getting the opportunity to represent the school.
Football - St Paul's Tournaments
The Y5 team had a very enjoyable afternoon, winning over half their seven matches and losing two. Leaving them in the 3/4th play-off where, unfortunately they just ran out of energy to claim a medal. It is a treat for a Headteacher to be able to have the time to take a team out for the afternoon but the team effort and application made it worthwhile. Mr Brown selected two girls in the team on merit, and it was great to see the team playing with such a good team spirit.
The Y6 team went the following Friday and also had a very strong afternoon. They did not lose any of their group matches but, unfortunately too many drawn matches left them in the 3rd/4th play off as well. However, they did manage to secure the victory and come back with some hard-earned medals.
Lacrosse
In their major tournament for the year, the team had a mixture of girls and boys within it from Years 4 to 6 all with different experiences of the sport.
They also progressed through to the 3/4th play off and managed to secure victory. Thank you to our parent volunteers (moonlighting from their netball commitments) for taking the children.
Mr Brown's holiday camps (CB Sports)
He is planning on running these from Monday 7th April to Friday 11th April inclusive, for Years 4,5 & 6. You can attend all the week or individual days. Please see the attachment below.
Book donation
Thank you to Emma from Home Nip and Tuck for donating a bundle of Usbourne books on wellbeing for children both Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. The donation was arranged via plum pudding books and the books will be appreciated by many children.
Prevent
As part of the school's safeguarding strategy, the staff received some recent training on this. Below is our Prevent risk assessment which is shared under our safeguarding section on the website.
