  • A fortnight in Year 4

    Published 30/11/23

Over the past two weeks we have learnt so much in Year 4.

In science, we have been learning about which materials are good conductors and which are good insulators in order to make our own circuits with switches.

In maths, we have learnt all about facts families and introduced some new maths vocabulary; factors, product and sum. If you know one multiplication fact, then you also know its family facts.

In writing we have written a wonderful piece of direct speech and started to learn all about prepositions.

In D&T we have painted our wardrobes in interesting and different shades of brown to represent different grains of wood.

In computing we have been coding (AT SPEED) and debugging code to make sure we can complete multistep coding problems.

In geography, we have been learning all about mountains and mountain ranges and what a Nepalese child's journey to school might look like compared to ours in Sheen.

In addition to all of this we have been learning our Chritsmas concert songs, remembering all the different seasons in French, playing lacrosse matches and discussing how best to tackle problems in PSHE.

  • Electrical circuits

    Published 16/11/23

In Science we have been building our own simple circuits. The children have thoroughly enjoyed using the buzzers, motors and bulbs.  In addition, they understand what a good conductor is and what material makes a good insulator. They can really quickly identify a complete and broken circuit. The children are starting to see how their circuits and science learning will accompany their D and T wardrobe designs. We are all really looking forward to creating our illuminated wardrobes later in the term!

  • The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe

    Published 01/11/23

We have gone through the wardrobe!

This week, Year 4 started reading Narnia, The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe. We have been using our inference skills to decide which of the characters are bossy, scared and most mischievous. We have just met an interesting character who is half goat, half man and are getting ready to write a detailed piece of description showing off all of our writing skills. These include but are not limited to expanded noun phrases, subordinate clauses, conjunctions and brilliant vocabulary. This week we have already seen words such as decrepit, syncopated and ominous used to describe the lamppost and falling snow of Narnia.

  • Hindu Temple

    Published 12/10/23

This week, all of Year 4 visited the beautiful Hindu Temple in Wimbledon. We learnt so much about the building and religion. For example, the Temple used to be a church up until the early 80s. The children loved seeing all the deities with their fruit offerings and enjoyed the calming incense. The children were all brilliantly behaved and listened well to a talk all about the Temple. Some children and teachers were lucky enough to try on some traditional Hindu clothing. Mrs Barrington-Hays looked fabulous in her very expensive Sari. It was so lovely to compliment the learning we have been doing in the classroom on this wonderful trip.

  • Getting our Greek on!

    Published 27/09/23

This week, Year 4 have thrown themselves into learning about all things Greek. They have been studying Greek artefacts in History, writing and reading about Pandoras box in English, where there was a particular focus on writing complex and compound sentences. The children have been deciding whether to persuade Pandora to open the box... or Not! In Art, we have started designing our own Greek Collagraph pots. It has been brilliant to see how carefully Year 4 have designed their pots and experimented with different rubbing and stencil techniques.  They really take pride in their learning. Well done Year 4 - we are all excited about another week of learning and Ancient Greek day on October 20th.

Last week we visited Putney Arts Theatre to put on a play in a day. The children manipulated  props and their bodies in space ,to create creatures and conjure the magic found in the book 'Leon and the Place Between'. They each had speaking lines to narrate the story and even had the opportunity of improvising their own scenes.

  • Divorced, beheaded, died. Divorced beheaded, survived!

    Published 28/06/23

This term we have all thoroughly enjoyed being historians and becoming Henry VIII experts. We have been investigating an important question; was king Henry VIII a hero or a villain? Some of us are yet to decide. To support our learning we have been looking at how he treated all six of his famous wives and how he treated the people he reigned over. It was amazing to support research in class and for homework by visiting Hampton Court Palace last week. The highlight for many was the wonderful-guided tour and workshop. And of course, everyone loved getting lost in the maze! We have started working on a new computing project and everyone is excited to put our King VIII learning into action, by creating a short film about his life.

Over the last couple of weeks, the children in Year 4, have been learning about angles. During their lessons, we have discussed what right angles, obtuse angles and acute angles are! We then made our learning interactive and memorable by taking the children outside to give them the opportunity to draw a range of angles and order them.

  • Tooth Decay Results, Smoothie Bikes and Orienteering

    Published 25/04/23

We've had a busy start to the Summer Term!

Last week we observed the results of our tooth decay experiment. We discovered the effects of the following substances on tooth enamel: Coca-Cola, vinegar, coffee and water. The children could see the staining that Coca-Cola and coffee caused to the egg shell, that the egg shell stayed the same in water, but were horrified that the egg shell disintegrated in the vinegar!

We pedalled our smoothies to perfection to help raise money for our Forest, Field and Fun initiative on Thursday.

The day before Juniper Hall, we got outside and brushed up on our orienteering skills, ready for our geography field skills trip to Juniper Hall this week!
