    Published 16/04/24

Welcome back Year 1! We hope you have all had a lovely relaxing holiday and are ready for lots of fun learning!

This week in Maths we have explored mass. We have used scales and practised using key vocabulary such as: heavier, lighter, balanced, greater than, less than. Next week we will start to look at multiplication and division.

In English, we have started our new topic of Traditional Tales. The first two weeks of this term we are reading the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. We will be learning about the features of a letter and telling the truth. This links with our living value for this term - Honesty.

In geography, we are learning about weather and seasons. We are going to learn how to measure the weather using weather equipment. We will be making our own rain gauge next week!

We have started our new science topic for this term - Plants! We are going to learn the difference between wild and planted flowers. This week we are going on a plant hunt around the school. We are going to learn how plants grow and what they need to survive.

We have lots of exciting things planned for this term and can't wait to start!

    Poetry, partitioning and pond dipping

This week Year 1 have been learning about onomatopoeia and alliteration in poems. They have exceeded our expectations and writing some amazing alliterative sentences and a poem about the seaside packed full of onomatopoeia! In maths, we have been learning to partition numbers into tens and ones. They have used the dienes, drawn examples in their books and worked out some word problems. In science, we have learnt about carnivores, herbivores and omnivores, and this week we went pond dipping finding newts and much much more.

Year 1 have had a busy couple of weeks. We have started a new topic in English - Poetry! We stared by acting out and performing some poems. We then explored rhyming and similes. We are working as hard as ants! We have had a go writing our own poems which we will be bringing home at the end of this week. In Maths, we have learnt about numbers 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50. We are looking at how to represent numbers using tens and ones. In Science, we are learning about carnivores, herbivores and omnivores. We have learnt what the difference is between these animals, and we have had a go 'feeding' the animals their food. This week we have swum like dolphins as we have started swimming lessons!

We are really looking forward to our trip to Brooklands on Thursday. We can't wait to tell you all about it!
